Formados en Manchester (Inglaterra) en 1975. Fueron una de las bandas más influyentes surgidas de la ola inicial de punk rock. Los Buzzcocks se inspiraron en la energía de los Sex Pistols pero sin su compromiso político. Pete Shelley (McNeish) (guitarrista, voz y letrista) y Howard Devoto (Traford) eran seguidores de The Velvet Underground y The Stooges. Steve Diggle se unió al grupo como bajista y John Maher a la batería. Devoto abandonó el grupo en 1977. Telonearon a los Sex Pistols en 1976. Debutaron con el single Orgasm addict en 1977. Otros miembros del grupo fueron Garth Smith (bajo, sustituido por Steve Garvey), Phil Barker (batería, sustituido por Danny Farrant) y Tony barber (bajo). Se separaron en 1981 y volvieron a reunirse en 1989.
